![]() Internet Mapping Service Frequently Asked Questions:UPDATED! March 27, 2008Do you have aerial photography and what is the pixel resolution? Yes, we have aerial color/infrared photography available from 2006, 2004, 1999 and 1995. The pixel resolutions for the 2006 color photography is 1.64 feet. The 2004 color photography have pixel resolutions of 1 foot for rural and 6 inch for urban areas. We also have infrared photography that was flown by SCDNR in 2006 and 1999 with pixels of approximately 3 feet. Finally, we have black and white photography that was flown in 1995 with a pixel resolution of 2 feet. All sets of photography can be seen with our Internet Mapping Services at their full resolution. UPDATED! February 26, 2008 How often do you update the data on the website? The GIS data is updated constantly. You are viewing the exact same data that we are using in the GIS Department. Please keep in mind that certain data layers may not change for an extended period of time! UPDATED! January 2, 2008 Which internet browsers are supported? Currently, only Internet Explorer 6.0+ is fully supported by BCGIS. Previous versions of Internet Explorer are not supported. Recent versions of Mozilla/Firefox can access our site and appear to function properly. If you are using unsupported web browsers, please be aware that our ability to assist you will be severely limited. UPDATED! January 2, 2008 I'm looking for the buttons on the GIS Mapping Service but I only see a few of them? If everything is displaying correctly you should see a total of 17 buttons on the pop-up version of the Internet Mapping Service. Why does nothing seem to happen when I click on the "I AGREE" button? What's wrong? When you click on "I AGREE" a popup window appears with the GIS Mapping Browser. If this doesn't happen, most likely you have a POPUP blocker enabled. You must override or disable the popup settings. If you are uncertain whether or not you have a popup blocker, please go to our POPUP Blocker Test Page to help determine whether or not a popup blocker is prohibiting you from accessing the GIS Mapping Services. If you cannot override your popup blocker there is now a NON-POPUP version of the GIS Mapping Service available that has some limitations. Why and what functionality is lost by not using the POPUP version of your Internet Mapping Service? Most of the functions that are removed is supplemental information that goes beyond our website. Removed items include but are not limited to printing maps, accessing additional information on parcels such as paid taxes and property cards. Other additional information removed includes soil code information, wetlands code information and zoning code information are removed. These functions are removed because they require popup windows in order to display the supplemental information. Can you tell me about a specific soil code (what does it mean, is it good, etc.)? Some soil code information is available by clicking the soil code hyperlink using the GIS Mapping Service. Beyond the information provided the GIS Department cannot answer your questions about soil information. You should contact the Soil & Conservation District Office if you have further questions. What happened to the old GIS Mapping Browser? In January 2006, February 2004 and January 2003 we revised the GIS internet mapping services. The older browsers have been retired and are unavailable for public use. How do I find property by TMS number or Owner's Name?
Yes, this feature is now available through the GIS Internet Mapping Service. Why does nothing seem to happen when I click on the "PRINT MAP" button? What's wrong? When you click on "PRINT MAP" a popup window will appear with the GIS Mapping Browser. If this doesn't happen, (BCGIS logo is continously cycling) most likely you have a POPUP blocker enabled. You must override or disable the popup settings for the map to be able to print. If you are uncertain whether or not you have a popup blocker, please go to our POPUP Blocker Test Page to help determine whether or not a popup blocker is prohibiting you from accessing the GIS Mapping Services. Why does the GIS Mapping Service take so long to load? Berkeley County's GIS Mapping Service is HIGHLY graphic intensive. The use of a high-speed Internet connection, such as a Cable Modem or DSL will provide optimal performance. Dial-up Internet access should work with the GIS Mapping Service but it will be significantly slower in downloading the GIS information. The key is to be patient while the GIS Mapping Service loads. Why do I get the message "YOUR SCREEN RESOULTION IS NOT SUPPORTED. YOU CANNOT CONTINUE"? Most likely you are using a very low screen resolution. Very low screen resolutions are incompatible and cannot display the GIS Mapping Service correctly. Please see your System Administrator for further assistance. What happened to the old way of printing maps and why are they smaller now? After careful evaluation BCGIS decided to reduce the complexity of the map printing procedure based on user responses. The steps to print a map are reduced from five to two steps. The drawback to reducing the number of steps to print a map requires a smaller map so it will print on portrait or landscape paper orientation. If this is an issue with you, please let us know via email or feedback form. Why do I get the message "Requested Service Is Not Available"? More than likely we are performing regular maintenence on the mapping services. The mapping service should be back up within a matter of 15-30 minutes. If the message persists for hours or days please contact us. Why do I get the message "Unable to display: MapServer requested image too big and can not be created"? This problem is RESOLVED to the best of our knowledge. Please let us know via email our feedback form if you receive this message. When I search by a TMS number I get a message that says "NO RECORDS FOUND" even though I know the TMS number is correct? This is usually a problem if you are using dashes in your search. Try searching without any dashes. For example instead of using "234-00-00-001" try "2340000001" instead. Are searches case sensitive? No they are not. You can use lower case letters, upper case letters or a combination without any problems. When I view the 1999 aerial photography the colors look incorrect? The 1999 photography is infrared based. The photography will appear as primarily a shade of red. If the photography is appearing as a red shade but appears very basic in color, then most likely your video card is set on a very low color setting. The photography should appear adequately with a minimum of 256 colors. The GIS data appears, then when I zoom in or out it will disappear. What is going on? There are a lot of GIS layers that activates and deactivates depending on the scale of the map. An example of this process is the aerial photography. You will notice that the aerial photography will turn on only when you are zoomed in fairly close and as you zoom out it will turn off automatically. This has been purposefully set up to optimize the viewing of the most popular GIS layers at a given scale. The property lines appear, then when I zoom in, zoom out or pan everything has a yellow color and are numbered. What is going on? This problem is RESOLVED to the best of our knowledge. Please let us know via email or our feedback form if you receive this message. How do I get a better quality or larger map? The best thing to do is to contact Berkeley Contact GIS Department. The GIS Department's information can be located HERE! I found a problem or have a question concerning the property lines and/or data, does your Department handle that? All parcel layer (property lines) changes must be verified and approved by our Real Property Services (Assessor) Office. Please contact them if you believe there are any discrepancies in the data. I found a problem with the street lines, who do I contact? If you find a problem with the street lines you will need to contact our Address Information Department to verify and correct the problem. I found a problem with the zoning layer, who do I contact? If you find a problem with the zoning layer you will need to contact the appropriate office depending on the location of the problem within Berkeley County. If it is a problem with Berkeley County's zoning layer (usually outside of city and town limits) then you will need to contact Berkeley County's Planning and Zoning. If the zoning problem is within city or town limits then you will need contact the appropriate city or town concerning the problem. Back to top |
